MAJOR CAUSES of AC/CELL SYSTEM SHUTDOWN

Hi Winds

Strong winds can knock down power lines and damage cellular towers, leading to widespread outages. These winds also disrupt the physical infrastructure necessary to maintain communication networks.

Wildfires

Wildfires often lead to Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) by utility companies to prevent further fire spread. Fire damage to cellular towers and power lines also disrupts critical communication.

Floods

Floodwaters damage electrical substations and power grids, leading to prolonged power outages. They can also destroy cellular towers and underground communication cables.

Storm Surges

Similar to floods, storm surges inundate power infrastructure, causing widespread outages. Cellular networks fail when submerged equipment or damaged towers lose functionality.

Overloaded Networks

During emergencies, too many users attempting to access the network at once can overwhelm cellular infrastructure, causing it to crash. This leads to limited or no communication during critical incidents.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes often damage power plants, transformers, and substations, leading to blackouts. Cellular towers and fiber-optic cables are also susceptible to structural damage, resulting in network failures.

Manmade Attacks

Cyberattacks on power grids or physical sabotage of power plants and cellular towers can lead to extensive blackouts and loss of communication. Targeted attacks on critical infrastructure can also disrupt emergency alert systems.

Freeze

Extreme cold can cause ice accumulation on power lines, leading to line breaks and power outages. Cellular infrastructure is vulnerable to freezing temperatures, which can disrupt network functionality and damage equipment.

WHEN DID AC & CELL GO DOWN AND CREATE ADD’L CHAOS

Maui Fires

(Hawaii, 2023

Deaths: At least 102 people.

AC and Cellular Outages: Power lines were downed, and widespread outages cut off electricity and cellular services in large parts of the island. Many residents did not receive emergency alerts due to the lack of communication infrastructure, making evacuations more difficult.

Hurricane Maria

(Puerto Rico, 2017)

Deaths: Approximately 2,975 people

.AC and Cellular Outages: Power was out across most of Puerto Rico for months, and cellular service was unavailable for extended periods due to tower damage. This greatly hindered rescue operations and communication with residents.

Hurricane Katrina

(Louisiana, 2005)

Deaths: Over 1,800 people.

AC and Cellular Outages: Power outages lasted for weeks, and cellular networks were overwhelmed, especially in New Orleans. Emergency services struggled to maintain communication, leaving many without vital information during the crisis.

Texas Winter Storm

(2021)

Deaths: At least 246 people.

AC and Cellular Outages: Prolonged freezing temperatures knocked out power for millions of people for days, and cellular networks failed due to equipment freezing or lack of power. Communication breakdowns contributed to slow emergency responses and left residents without critical alerts.

Northeast Blackout

(U.S. and Canada, 2003)

Deaths: At least 100 people.

AC and Cellular Outages: A massive power grid failure affected over 50 million people, and cellular networks quickly became overloaded and unusable. The blackout lasted up to 4 days in some areas, severely limiting communication.

Paradise Camp Fire

(California, 2018)

Deaths: 85 people.

AC and Cellular Outages: Power lines were cut off by utility companies to prevent further fire spread, and many cellular towers were destroyed. As a result, emergency alerts failed to reach many residents in time.
